Subsequently, in December 2018, the government enacted legislation to redefine the mandate of the Kosovo Security Force, effecting its transformation into an army. Tensions between ethnic Albanians and the Yugoslav government were significant, not only due to ethnic tensions but also due to political ideological concerns, especially regarding relations with neighbouring Albania.

However, speakers of BCS tend to refer to their own language as Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, or Montenegrin, depending on their ethnicity, and consider it to be distinct from the other groups’ languages, despite mutual intelligibility. The Albanian share of the population rose from about half in 1946 to about four-fifths by the 1990s. In the second half of the 20th century, as a result of Serbian out-migration and higher Albanian birth rates, there was a dramatic shift in the ethnic composition of Kosovo.

The number of monthly users also increased from 1.5 billion in 2022 to 1.8 billion as of 2024. Meta issued a public apology, stating that a technical error led to the unintended recommendation of such content. Despite the “TikTokification” of Reels and the parent company Meta spending millions on courting content creators, user engagement continued to lag way behind TikTok as of 2022. In 1929, the country was transformed into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the territories of Kosovo were reorganised among the Banate of Zeta, the Banate of Morava and the Banate of Vardar. Soon, there were concerted Serbian colonisation efforts in Kosovo during various periods between Serbia’s 1912 takeover of the province and World War II, causing the population of Serbs in Kosovo to grow by about 58,000 in this period. During the Balkan Wars, over 100,000 Albanians left Kosovo and about 50,000 were killed in the massacres that accompanied the war. However, this autonomy never materialised, and the revolt created serious weaknesses in the Ottoman ranks, luring Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece into declaring war on the Ottoman Empire and starting the First Balkan War. The underlying ethnic tensions became part of a broader struggle of Christian Serbs against Muslim Albanians.

As a result of these reforms, there was a massive overhaul of Kosovo’s nomenklatura and police, that shifted from being Serb-dominated to ethnic Albanian-dominated through firing Serbs in large scale. Nonetheless, these conflicts were relatively low-level compared with other areas of Yugoslavia during the war years. During the war years, some Serbs and Montenegrins were sent to concentration camps in Pristina and Mitrovica. Kosovar Albanians’ right to receive education in their own language was denied alongside other non-Slavic or unrecognised Slavic nations of Yugoslavia, as the kingdom only recognised the Slavic Croat, Serb, and Slovene nations as constituent nations of Yugoslavia.

Strengthening international relationships will contribute greatly to ensuring Kosovo’s stability and growth within the Western Balkans.
